Uli Hoeness has tendered his resignation as president of Bayern Munich after being sentenced to three and a half years in prison for tax evasion.

The 62-year-old admits his decision to evade taxes by using a secret bank account in Switzerland amounted to the "biggest mistake" of his life and he confirmed he will not be appealing Thursday's judgement by the Munich state prosecutors.

That stance flies in the face of the initial claims of his defence solicitor Hanns Feigen, who announced an appeal would be made in the wake of Thursday's verdict.

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has been found guilty of tax evasion and sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison.

The 62-year-old, one of the most powerful figures in German football, was charged with dodging 3.5m euro (£2.9m) in taxes through an undeclared Swiss bank account.

But when his trial opened on Monday, he admitted to avoiding 15m euro (£12.5m) more. Then it came out through an examination of documents he provided to investigators shortly before the trial that he owed 27.2m euro (£22.7m) in total.

Manager Arsene Wenger sees no reason why Arsenal cannot pull off another shock result when they look to upset Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena once again on Tuesday night.

The Gunners head out to Bavaria looking to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first leg of their Champions League last 16 clash, and taking on a team who are rampant at the top of the Bundesliga.

Wenger, though, insists his side, buoyed by their FA Cup quarter-final win over Everton, should be confident of a repeat performance from last season, when they produced a remarkable performance in Munich to win 2-0 and exit the competition only on away goals.
