On Thursday 28th August 2014, Just hours after the Nigerian Minister of Health declared Nigeria’s Ebola outbreak to be contained, as reported on BN, news emerged of a new case in Port Harcourt.

When the news broke, details were scarce and rumours were rampant on who, how and why Ebola spread to Port Harcourt.

In a news briefing on Friday 29th August 2014, the Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samson Parker revealed key details on the case.

Pastor Oyakhilome’s wife files for divorce in London court, allegesadultery

According to The Cable, the dissolution of the marriage between Christ Embassy Church founder, Pastor Christian Oyakhilome, and his wife, Rev. Anita Odegwa Oyakhilome, has entered the final phase…

 The wife is seeking divorce on the grounds of “unreasonable behaviour” and “adultery”. She outlined several allegations against the pastor which cannot publish for legal reasons. The divorce case, with Suit No FD14D01650, was filed on April 9, 2014 at Divorce Section A, Central Family Court, First Avenue House, High Holborn, London, UK, on Anita’s behalf by Attwaters Jameson Hill Solicitors, a full-service law firm with expertise in commercial law and a strong consumer focus in family, wills and estate, personal injury law and medical negligence.

FG Reinstates 16,000 Fired Resident Doctors

On Wednesday, August 13, the Nigerian government fired all 16,000 resident doctors in the country during efforts to end the Nigerian Medical Association’s (NMA) strike, which had lasted for 55 days before it was called off a few days ago.

Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, has today announced that the government has decided to reverse its decision to terminate the nationwide residency program, AIT reports.

As a result, the 16,000 resident doctors who were fired because of the termination of the program, have now been reinstated.

Health minister confirms Ebola death, two other cases in Port Harcourt

OK, this is getting confusing. On Tuesday August 26th, Nigeria's Health Minister, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu said there was only case of Ebola in Nigeria, now he's confirmed that a doctor indeed died in Port Harcourt from Ebola. 

Speaking with newsmen in Abuja today, the Minister said the doctor died on Friday Aug. 22nd after treating a diplomat who had direct contact with Patrick Sawyer, the first case of Ebola virus disease in Nigeria. He said laboratory analysis on his corpse showed he died from Ebola.

ATM charges, bank customers in Nigeria to now pay N65

The Central Bank of Nigeria has re-introduced ATM charges for cash withdrawals made on other banks’ Automated Teller Machines. In a circular dated August 13rd 2014 and signed by the Director, Banking and Payment Systems Department, CBN, Mr. Dipo Fatokun , the re-introduced ATM deduction pegged at N65 per withdraw would take effect from September 1st 2014.

The circular states that the first three withdrawals in the month of September on other banks ATM would be free but the charges would start counting from the fourth withdrawal. Read parts of the circular after the cut...

Ebola: Aliko Dangote Donates $150 Million To Combat Outbreak in Nigeria

The Dangote Group, the company owned by Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote has donated $150 million to halt the spread of Ebola in Nigeria.

The Federal Government confirmed the report.

Nigeria confirmed 11 cases of the lethal haemorrhagic fever on Thursday.

Reuters and Business Daily Africaconfirm it is a $150 million donation.

Ebola Vaccine To Be Ready In 2015

The World Health Organization today announced that clinical trials of a preventative vaccine for the Ebola virus made by British pharma company GlaxoSmithKline may begin next month and made available by 2015.

According to AFP, Jean-Marie Okwo Bele, the WHO's head of vaccines and immunisation, said this; adding that he was optimistic about making the vaccine commercially available.

Lagos Govt warns TB Joshua not to accept Ebola victims in his church

The Lagos state government has warned pastor TB Joshua of Synagogue Church of All Nations not to accept Ebola victims if they come to him for healing.

According to The Nation officials of Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Federal Government, led by the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, visited him seeking his cooperation in ensuring victims of the deadly virus are not brought to his church for healing. Synagogue is a popular destination for sick people who go there for divine healing. 

“We have our strategies that we intend to share with you. Again, we need to know the resources you have here because whether it is one or two cases, if they are allowed to get out, it is a major problem. Ebola Outbreak Can be Stopped” – U.S Health Official

Washington DC (dpa/NAN) ― Tom Frieden, Director of the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said on Monday that the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa can be stopped

“We know how to stop Ebola now,” he said in Washington on Monday.

Frieden said the government-funded CDC was “surging” its response to the outbreak and would send 50 public health employees to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone to help stop the outbreak within the next 30 days.

5.3 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Major Cities In SOUTH AFRICA

The Associated Press Reports that A 5.3 earthquake has shaken buildings in Johannesburg and surrounding areas. There are no immediate reports of casualties following the tremor on Tuesday. The U.S. Geological Survey says it had a magnitude of 5.3. The quake was also felt in Pretoria, the South Africa
capital, and Hartbeespoort, a nearby resort town. The USGS said the quake was centered in Orkney, 170 kilometers (105 miles) southwest of Johannesburg.

EBOLA Hit Sierra Leone’s Very Essence In DANGER — President

Sierra Leone’s leader Monday appealed to the people of the Ebola-hit west African country to fight together against the deadly epidemic, warning that “the very essence” of the nation was at stake.

President Ernest Bai Koroma urged families to ensure that victims were reported to health authorities and asked every Sierra Leonean to take responsibility for raising awareness about the killer tropical virus.

This is a collective fight. The very essence of our nation is at stake,” he said in a televised address marking a “stay at home day” aimed at recalibrating the state’s response to the outbreak.Sierra Leone has seen 574 cases — the most of any nation — and 252 deaths since the virus spread from neighbouring Guinea in May.
